Geography

Intent

Our Geography curriculum follows the core knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum. Through a cross curricular approach it is our intent to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, making links with their learning.  Our aim is to foster a curiosity and fascination about the world in which they live; allowing them to investigate a range of places – beginning with Dover and then further afield, both in Britain and abroad, as they move up through the year groups. This progression enables the children to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the Earth’s physical properties and human processes.

We want our children to develop a real sense of who they are through experiences which allow them to explore and ask questions about the local area, their heritage and what makes their local area unique and special.  We aim to enable them to develop their ability to apply geographical skills and to communicate their findings and understanding to others.

Implementation

At St Richard's we have developed our own curriculum programme based on our Geography Progression of Skills document ensuring progression across each year group and across the school.  By linking learning to a range of topics, children have opportunities to investigate and interpret a range of geographical locations, starting with their local area of Dover and broadening their locational knowledge of the UK and then the wider world.

We teach engaging lessons which arouse the children’s curiosity about the world around them and encourage to become active and independent learners.

Our delivery of the National Curriculum is supported by visits within the local area, ensuring that the children are immersed in exciting experiences to enrich their learning.

Impact

Our children will leave St Richard’s with a well-developed curiosity about geographical locations in Britain and across the world, the skills needed to ask probing and reflective geographical questions and to seek appropriate answers to them, and a strong motivation to continue this journey of discovery.

Our Geography curriculum starts the children off on a learning journey that ensures they are ready for their next steps at secondary school with the skills needed to be thoughtful and articulate as Geographers. In addition, they will leave our school with powerful memories from the wide range of experiences they have encountered here.
