“A positive school environment where pupils recognise their cultural diversity and welcome new pupils into the school’s caring community”

Intent

At St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. PSHE is taught across the school from EYFS- Year 6 on a weekly basis and we follow our own PSHE curriculum which has been based around the 'Programme of Study for PSHE Education' but tailored to suit our own school and the learning that we cover across the academic year in early years, KS1 and KS2.

Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Gospel Values; Love, Kindness, Forgiveness, Respect and Honesty. These values are all incorporated into our fundamental school rule: Love yourself and those around you.

Implementation

Our whole school PSHE curriculum is shaped by our school vision in which we work 'Together towards excellence with Christ as our guide'. We guide our children to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach PSHE according to the National Curriculum guidance, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression which is detailed in our whole school progression map. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Some lesson are stand alone lessons which are planned for and resourced carefully. Some of our PSHE learning is covered during our reflection time and some learning involves inviting visitors in to learn about things such as fire safety, oral hygiene, mental health and wellbeing, or road safety.

Impact

When our children come to leave St Richard’s they will:

  • Have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
  • Have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships.
  • Have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society valuing every individual.
  • Have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.
